Strategic Planning
"Focusing on the future is key to a community's survival and success."
OCI believes that:
- Change is inevitable and positive change occurs at the grassroots level.
- A group of citizens that reflects the diversity of the community must join together to create a vision of their community in the future based on their shared values.
The community must identify goals, objectives and action plans.
- Each member of the community has a part to play in the actions taken to reach the goals.
- With these beliefs in mind the Oklahoma Community Institute works with neighborhoods, communities, counties and regions within Oklahoma who want to design their own future. The process that is used is called "Focus on Your Future: A Strategic Approach to Community Improvement" and is based on a model used by the National Civic League to help communities across the country reinvent their future.
The OCI process is made up of two major components:
- Creation of a structure for problem solving and the creation of change
- Development of a community wide strategic plan
The OCI process is based on a sound planning model and is implemented inside a structure specifically designed for creating the future that a planning area wants to achieve. The structure gives the community a framework for working on solutions to challenges that face the whole community. This structure is one of the significant aspects that differentiates this process for improving the community from traditional methods. The planning model is designed to systematically move communities toward their preferred future.
We're not just about creating a PLAN. We're about creating an opportunity for positive CHANGE!
